Hi, I have a problem with netwebsearch.com.  Everytime I run a google search, Netwebsearch.com also pops up.  I have looked on many sites and tried to follow the instructions but unfortunately a lot of the links to the suggested downloads don't seem to be working.  I know that I have adblaster in my registry.  Can anyone help me?  I seem to only be able to boot up my computer in safe mode.  Here is the HijackThis log:

Run hijackthis, put a tick in the box  beside these entries listed below and ONLY these entries, double check to make sure, then make sure all browser & email windows are closed and press fix checked

I did as you said but the problem with starting the computer still continues.  When I power up my laptop it just hangs on the windows xp screen.  I then have to keep my finger on the power button until it closes and then I start up in safe mode.

Incidentally the problem with the netwebsearch.com toolbar pop up seems to have vanished, thanks!

That sounds like a driver problem lets see what this shows

Download WinPFind3U.exe  to your Desktop and double-click on it to extract the files. It will create a folder named WinPFind3u on your desktop.
  • Open the WinPFind3u folder and double-click on WinPFind3U.exe to start the program.
    • In the Processes group click All
    • In the Win32 Services group click ALL
    • In the Driver Services group click ALL
    • In the Registry group click ALL
    • In the Files Created Within group click 60 days Make sure Non-Microsoft only is UNCHECKED
    • In the Files Modified Within group select 30 days Make sure Non-Microsoft only is UNCHECKED
    • In the File String Search group select ALL
  • Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
  • The program will be scanning huge amounts of data so depending on your system it could take a long time to complete. Let it run unhindered until it finishes.
  • When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
  • Save that notepad file
Use the Reply button and attach the notepad file here  . I will review it when it comes in.

it will run in safe mode so that is OK

I am still concerned that I have AdBlaster on my laptop.  Can you suggest any reputable s/w that I can use?

I can't see anything in that

when did your boot problem start. did you install anything new or do any updates before that

what told you that you had adblaster & where

until we get the computer booting normally it will be difficult to install any new software to fix any problems as most ned to install in normal mode

There were 3 different installations around the time I started having problems.

I purchased the CA Inernet Security Suite which I installed on my dad's computer and mine (the suite included 3 licences).  I had no problems with my dad's installation as I uninstalled AVG before installing CA.  Unfortunately when I installed CA on mine, I didn't uninstall the free version of CA and I think that might have caused problems.  I have not been able to successfully uninstall the firewall (it is still showing up in the add/remove programs but won't give me the option of removing it.  I have reverted back to just the free CA antivirus version.

The second thing was the usual Microsoft updates

The third and most stupid thing I did was to join EZ Movies.  I started to download all the software they tell you to install and that is where I got the AdBlaster.  I did get a warning from the Microsoft Defender I think but I thought the site could be trusted (I know, I was extremely stressed at the time!).  I have since run XoftSpy scan and that confirms that I have it (see attachment showing screen shots).  I have been doing some research to find out the best software to buy as I have come across a review putting XoftSpy as No. 13.  However, having followed reviews about downloading movies and getting that completely wrong, I don't trust reviews that easily anymore!).

Any thoughts?

it is very likely to be the ca security suite

uninstall ca as much as it will let you ( including free version ) from add/remove programs reboot & post a new HJT log

we will then remove the rest & see if that works

ca doesn't run in safe mode anyway so it isn't protecting you
