Hello all,

I have a trojan issue being worked on here thanks to Derek. Been learning so much about spyware/malware and similar. And I thought (like most I guess) that I was reasonably secure with my AV/firewall and common sense surfing habits.

Where to now? Has anyone got comments on a good combination of Anti-Virus/Malware package? My starting point would be the Norton Anti-Virus 2009/2010 I have now on two PCs, plus my Zonealarm Pro firewall.

So, Norton AV + Zonealarm + Huh

Candidates for Huh might be Prevx, Ad-Aware, or what?

Happy to pay for the Huh software as I do not believe we get a free lunch with most freebies. Am I wrong there?

Best regards to all from Hong Kong,
Richard

Added note: Prevx found two threats on my PC that were just setup exe files for software. Prevx had given them a clean bill of health several times on scans before raising this alarm, so wondering now about its accuracy. Deleted files anyway, as copies are available elsewhere. Mmmmhh ??

the protection you have sounds reasonable
I woukld not have a separate firewall & antivirus but use an all in one suite as tehy tend to work better together

if you already use Norton 2010 then get the security suite

I prefer Kaspersky because it updates quicker than any of the other antivirus companies but you will always find some  malware that some antiviruses detect before others

prevx tends to be quite accurate & if it now detects a set up file that it didn't previously, it is becasue of new detections added to it BUT if in nay doubt email tehm and ask, they will always reply & double check for you

Thanks Derek,

Understand your comment on having a single suite as I do get conflicts now and again with NAV+Zonealarm. It confuses the firewall status messages too, often prompting me that I have no firewall protection - when I have.

Have just upgraded to the Norton 360 full suite which gives me 2 PCs worth of protection, so fingers crossed I can close off my ports to malware Ok.

I tried to buy Prevx earlier today but the online purchase failed for some obscure reason. Maybe I mistyped something? If the purchase goes through I will be stuck with it as an extra check. If not, I will check out Kasperky.

Thanks for your help.

PS. Still got a very sick notebook that runs fine until I connect to Internet. Hope to hear your advice on that one. I found a rogue Thumbs.db file on my desktop machine today, just like the notebook, and guess it is something to do with all the malware programs I am installing/uninstalling. Deleted it anyway, despite the system file warning. Frustrating these spy/malware things.

Sorry for confusion Derek. The 'notebook' with problem is the one we are talking about in cleaning forum now. My desktop appeared to be having trouble but Ok.

Now have Norton 360 + Prevx on both machines, and all's well except for infected file cleanup problem as noted in other thread.
