CD Emulation Software (DAEMON Tools, Alcohol)

With the increase of rootkit/driver based infections, we have added a GMER AntiRootKit scan to our pre-posting steps, to help us identify the presence of such infections before any malware removal efforts take place.

Some CD Emulators use a hidden driver which can be seen as a rootkit, and can also interfere with a correct read of the state of the machine by our tools.

Another problem with these types of software can be their interference with proper Windows Updates on a Windows XP machine, as outlined in this Microsoft KB Article

These programs lock the Atapi.sys file and prevent Windows XP SP2, Windows XP SP3 from backing up the existing version of the file.

In light of this, we require that anyone wanting help uninstall such software before performing any of the pre-posting scans. They can be re-installed once your helper has determined the cleaning process is complete.

The following should be uninstalled via the Control Panel:

Daemon Tools and Daemon Tools Lite
Alcohol 120% and 52%
AstroBurn

A: To remove SPTD, simply download SPTD setup file "SPTDinst-v160-x86.exe" for Windows 2000/XP/2003/Vista (32-bit) [911,856 bytes] and execute it.

In dialog that appears press "Uninstall" button and then SPTD will remove itself from your Windows installation.
