Windows Update show that I'm current on Critical updates. It does show that I haven't downloaded the following:

Update for Windows XP (KB971513)
Update for Root Certificates [November 2009] (KB931125)
Internet Explorer 8 for Windows XP
Windows PowerShell 1.0 for Windows XP (KB926139)
Microsoft Base Smart Card Cryptographic Service Provider Package: x86 (KB909520)
Windows Search 4.0 for Windows XP (KB940157)

I started to download all the above, excluding IE8 but thought I'd hold off and see what you recommend.

Also, today Avira notified me that I had the following: html.crypted.gen
Deny Access was already checked, so that is what I opted for. I very seldom get such warnings and wonder if I might be related to facebook problem.

Will you give me directions on how to recover the changes that ComboFix makes to autorun CD, usb devices, etc.?

html.crypt.gen is a detection of an infection on a website you are visiting  so we have to rely on antivirus to block those

these 4 are optional but unless you use them , I wouldn't bother
Windows PowerShell 1.0 for Windows XP (KB926139) ( only really relevant for admin in corporate situations)
Microsoft Base Smart Card Cryptographic Service Provider Package: x86 (KB909520) ( unlikely you have a smart card)
Windows Search 4.0 for Windows XP (KB940157)  ( your choice, I found it slowed XP down a lot )
Update for Windows XP (KB971513)( not really needed, but should do no harm installling it )

these 2 should be done

Update for Root Certificates [November 2009] (KB931125)
Internet Explorer 8 for Windows XP

Hi Derek,
I thought I was waiting on reply from you - way too much on my plate. Sorry for slow delay.
I did the updates you recommended. And you asked previously what browser I'm using - always firefox.
Did I ever have a virus or? Do you think I'm completely safe now?
I attached screenshot of comboxfix location. Seems like there was a problem getting rid of it last time I was here for help. Please advise on how to remove it and SysProt, others that we've used.
Also, can you give me directions on how to reverse changes that using combofix created?
'Note: ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making it the default browser.
Note: Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CDs, floppies and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you -- please tell us when you reply. Read HERE why we disable autoruns'

just delete sysprot and dds

*Follow these steps to uninstall Combofix and the other tools it downloaded to remove the malware*
*  Click START then RUN
*  Now type Combofix /Uninstall in the runbox  and click OK.  Note the space between the X and the /U, it needs to be there.

This will also purge the restore folder and clear any malware that has been put in there. Now Empty Recycle bin on desktop Then reboot.

go here http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/index.php?page=3 for info on how to tighten your security settings and how to help prevent future attacks.

if cf doesn't uninstall as above then type this in teh run bix

"c:\documents and settings\Paul Legge\My Documents\Downloads\ComboFix.exe" /uninstall

I'm going through recommendations:

In ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS: Are these two javas unique or do I need to remove one?

java runtime environment 5.0 update 11
java 6 update 18

Are the 'Internet Options - ActiveX controls and Plug-ins.' on page you recommended for IE? If so, is there a link to do the same on firefox?

And as for secunia, PSI says I don't have any threats but when I run OSI, it shows several several items as out of date. How do I know which is correct?

OSI shows more than PSI so is more correct

uninstall java runtime environment 5.0 update 11

FF doesn't use active X so no need to alter anything

IE8 should have all suitable active X & security set by default so no need to worry too much with that. IE6 which is still very common is the big security risk if not set as suggested

thanks, derek. I didn't realize that about secunia osi vs. psi.
question: i just got a second email from same sender and it was also in facebook inbox. I reported it as spam and that removed it.
am i getting these because friend's account has been hacked into? I also got a second email today supposedly from facebook but it was much more obvious that it was spam.  however, the one that is from real friend is concerning. and that i got two today, makes me wonder if my computer is still vulnerable or?

also, did i have a virus/malware/spyware or not?

you had some very low level adware/spyware at the start but nothing to worry about

you don't appear to be infected

EVERYBODY gets spam emails and if a friend had your email address on their computer when infected, it will send to you, or if your email address was ever posted on a werb page anywhere at any time or if you filled in a survey or bought online, there is a strong possibility that your enmail address was sold on to a spammers list

You shouldn't be vulnerable if you watch what you click & keep antivirus etc updated to protect yourself
