Alureon.F Google Redirection problem.
« on: December 12, 2009, 05:36:13 »
My anti-virus identified Alureon.F and since then I have had google redirects and multiple trojans pop up.  When I try to run DDS, GMER, or Hijack from C:/ I get a warning stating that I "may not have the appropriate permissions".  My windows firewall has also been disabled as so;

It won't let me turn it on at all..
Thank you for your help!

Delete any existing version of ComboFix you have sitting on your desktop
Please read and follow all these instructions very carefully

Download ComboFix from Here to your Desktop.

**Note:  It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop  and run from the desktop and not any other folder on your computer**
--------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus and  anti-malware real-time protection and any script blocking components of them or your firewall before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results" or stop combofix running at all
  • Click on THIS LINK to see instructions on how to temporarily disable many security programs while running combofix. The list does not cover every program. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
  • Remember to re enable the protection again after combofix has finished
--------------------------------------------------------------------
2. Close any open browsers and any other programs you might have running
Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
If you are using windows XP It might display a pop up saying that "Recovery console is not installed, do you want to install?"
Please select yes & let it download the files it needs to do this
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" for further review

****Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze ****

Note: ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making it the default browser.
Note: Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CDs, floppies and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you -- please tell us when you reply. Read HERE why we disable autoruns

Please do not install any new programs or update anything (always allow your antivirus/antispyware to update) unless told to do so while we are fixing your problem. If combofix alerts to a new version and offers to update, please let it. It is essential we always use the latest version.

Thank You for the quick response, I did all as instructed but when I go to run ComboFix from the desktop I receive this:

I tried running Safe Mode and Safe Mode with Networking, but it would just restart any time I tried to boot it.
[Earlier, I was able to run the other diagnostics from an external drive (they would receive the same error when executed on C:]

we need to try something here, which might or might not work

first you need to disable onecare which is interfering with any fixes, you might have to uninstall it to let us do any fixes

do you have your windows cd

go to C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\nvata.sys  & right click it & select copy

then go to C:\  and right click a blank spot & select paste

that makes a copy of the file & palces it where we ned to use it

then download avenger from  http://swandog46.geekstogo.com/avenger2/avenger2.html

unzip it & place it on desktop

double click it run & in teh box paste the contents of the quote box

Quote

Files to move:
C:\nvata.sys | C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\nvata.sys

press execute & the computer will reboot

after booting copy the log it makes and post that back here then try combofix which should run

I did as instructed,(disabled onecare through CMD) and upon restart the avenger log said that it "could not locate nvata.sys.  I then tried to run combofix, but was still restricted.  I saw that the file I copied to C:\ was named "nvata" nvata.sys, so I renamed it ( and the original),  then tried running avenger again ( which said that it had completed successfully and could reboot.    Upon starting, I'm greeted by a screen that says " a system file [nvata.sys] is missing or corrupt."   It then asks for a windows CD to enter the recovery console, I have my CD now and am logged onto C:\WINDOWS.
What should I do from here? (sorry for messing up that bad, it was late).
Thank you

if you are in recovery console

type cd c:\windows\system32\drivers  press ok

then look for nvata.sys and make sure it is called nvata.sys & not any other name with spaces or any additional bits to it

let me know if it is called anything else

you should see several nvata.sys there with names like this
c:\windows\system32\drivers\nvata.sys3C446617

if there is NO nvata.sys on its own without teh extra letters then carefully write down the exact name of 1 of the files if thre letters etc after nvata.sys are different to what I have written, then change it to the one you find

then type ren c:\windows\system32\drivers\nvata.sys3C446617 nvata.sys  ( ppress ok/enter)

make sure there is a space between ren & C and between 3C446617   and nvata.sys

you should get a message file renamed successfully

once you get that type exit & press enter to get out of recovery console

reboot & see if it will boot normally
