Blank Screen on Windows Startup. No icons, no explorer.exe anywhere

I recently installed Norton A.V. on my kids laptop after she got a virus. I ran a full scan and it detected and removed a virus. When I rebooted, I got nothing at all except her screen saver. I am able to access the task manager and did notice there is no explorer.exe in the processes tab or anywhere in the system.

Any help will be greatly appreciated Derek!! I can not download anything as I have nothing on my screen. I even tried the system reinstallation disk and couldn't get that to boot. I'd like to restore the current OS if I can of course

I've forgotten which virus was removed but she kept getting a message telling her to buy some anti virus software and kept getting redirected making it almost impossible to use the computer

Derek:
when you get task manager up
go to file=> new task & type  explorer
press OK & you should get a desktop back

then go to start/run & type SFC /scannow

see if that cures it, if not let me know

jml1229:
Derek, I should have mentioned that I have tried to do this and get message "Windows cannot find "explorer". Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again.

Derek:
what version of windows do you have on the laptop

jml1229:
pretty sure it's xp, anyway to check
