if the cd/dvd isn't being detected on boot time and you can't boot to the cd, then I don't now of any way to fix it
you will have to take it to a repair shop who have the specialist tools to be able to

I was hoping you wouldn't say that of course. The CD player is a bit off in that it doesn't always open right up, go to green light. Any thing I might try with that?

sounds like it needs a replacement cd/dvd player I would definitely take this one to a shop to sort out unless you know someone with an external dvd drive that you can borrow to plug in & hope it boots from a USB external drive. soem laptops will & some won't
