Blank Screen on Windows Startup. No icons, no explorer.exe anywhere

<< < (2/4) > >>

jml1229:
it is XP

Derek:
what happens when you insert the recovery cd & then reboot

does the rc screen come up or does it boot direct into windows

If it is booting straight into windows then you need to get in to bios & change boot order to CD/dvd 1st & hard disc second

normally as it boots it says press F10 or F1 or simiaklr for set up

do that & change boot order then try a reinstall

it looks like the antivirus has quarantined or deleted vital system files

Soemtimes the Recovery disc has a non destgructive option to repair the system, taht might work but if it was a bad virus or rootkit, it is often better to do a full destructive recovery & reset to factory settings

jml1229:
I have done this, reset boot order to dvd but it didn't go to the CD. Is there a command or key to press during boot?

jml1229:
I just tried again after changing bios order and it still boots normally to windows.
Should I do anything in the system configuration utility as far as enabling or disabling things?

Derek:
either the cd player is dodgy or broken or something is bypassing it

normally when you boot with a cd in drive, it boots to a black screen that says press any key to boot from cd & if ignored will go to hd & boot normally

you can't use system configuration until you can boot into windows

can you boot into safe mode in windows by pressing F8 at boot time & select safe mode on black screen

if it boots to safe mode we can probably manage to repalce the missing files
